With the silly season upon us, we eat and drink more than usual—and not necessarily in a healthy way. The last thing people want to be worried about is skin problems!
We’ve created this guide with all our tips to help you survive the holidays with healthy skin.
Beauty sleep is essential
Lack of sleep deprives your skin of the chance to repair itself. A lack of sleep raises cortisol levels, which causes stress. Stress can damage your skin by speeding up aging and increasing breakouts.
Need help in the sleep department? We recommend Regul8 Relax! It contains a soothing blend of herbal ingredients to help keep you calm and help you sleep. Plus, it supports physical and mental functioning whilst at the same time aiding digestion! You can grab this from our website here, or in-clinic.
Be mindful of sugar intake
Let’s be honest, the best part about the holidays is all the delicious food and drink. But unfortunately, overindulging in sugar can lead to glycation, which is what accelerates skin aging.
Glycation is a chemical process that occurs when sugar binds to other molecules in your body, such as protein and lipids. Glycation creates byproducts that prevent healthy cell function and also creates free radicals, which damage cells further. As a result of glycation, skin molecules that keep your complexion looking tight and young—namely, collagen and elastin—are no longer able to do their jobs. As a result, you can also become more susceptible to environmental stressors such as UV light, pollution, and cigarette smoke.
To fight off sugar cravings this holiday season, try berries. They’re sweet and tasty—and good for your skin too!
Drink wisely
Avoid sugary drinks. Many alcoholic drinks contain high levels of sugar, which can lead to a spike in our insulin levels causing breakouts, inflammation, and reduction in the body’s ability to produce collagen.
Hot tip: the clearer the alcohol the better. Vodka, tequila, and gin process through our bodies fast than darker spirits or beer. Or, instead of a booze-filled holiday drink, try a wine spritzer with sparkling water and a splash of red wine. Red wine spritzers are a great way to satisfy a craving without overdoing it. Not to mention: Red wine is full of antioxidants and a splash of it can actually be great for your skin!
Cleanse your face
Although washing your face might be the last thing on your mind when you get home from a night out, it’s an important step in caring for your skin! Forgetting to remove it before you hit the sack can clog your pores and make your skin a breeding ground for bacteria. Cleanse and apply moisturiser to help give tired skin a boost of hydration.
Keep stress in check
This is a tough one around this time of year, we know!
But it’s important for your skin and overall health. Stress increases cortisol levels, causes acne breakouts, and accelerates aging.
High levels of cortisol are linked to an increased risk of bacterial infections, eczema, and skin disorders. While you can’t eliminate stress from your life entirely, there are ways to minimize its impact.
